Canterbury’s Lower School provides a loving, caring atmosphere with a curriculum that is both age-appropriate and individually challenging. The scope of the curriculum includes a strong fine arts and physical arts program, providing opportunities to explore and extend in a variety of areas including a phonetic approach to reading, accelerated math, Spanish, integrated social studies and hands-on scientific exploration. Classroom teachers work closely with our music and art teachers as well as our media specialist and science specialist to encourage each child’s interests with materials and activities to stimulate thinking.

Lower School children love to get their hands dirty. We take advantage of their natural curiosity and sense of adventure by putting this love to use on campus and off. Working in the butterfly and vegetable gardens, going on field trips and taking journeys to the Marine Studies Education Center on the upper campus gives students a look at the world beyond their classroom. Our trips are designed to complement our curriculum, and all give students the chance to learn team-building, leadership, problem-solving and help to strengthen the bonds between students and teachers.
