Middle School

The middle school program for grades 5-8 serves as a bridge between the lower and upper divisions, stressing academic, social, and life skills while the special talents of each child are identified and encouraged.

The middle school curriculum is challenging and is designed and reviewed so that it meets the changing needs of young adolescents. With emphasis on reading and writing skills in all disciplines, students take courses in foreign languages, arts education, science, social science, mathematics, computers and physical education. Our goal is to help each student become a self-directed learner who can work productively with large and small groups of peers.

Unique to the Middle School, students in grades 5-8 meet in advisory groups separated by grade and gender to facilitate peer-to-peer discussions with their faculty advisor who follows a character education curriculum. These advisors work in tandem with the Guidance Counselor and Director of Student Affairs as part of Canterbury’s Advisory Program (CAP). Developing a more complete sense of self is extremely important for middle school students and their current and future scholastic success. Helping students to be more secure in who they are and who they are becoming is an underlying objective of all the middle school activities.

The middle school years are a time for increased participation in athletics and co-curricular activities, ranging from drama productions to multiple-day field trips. Class trips are a big part of the middle school experience, helping students to learn more about themselves and each other and to expand their knowledge of the world. Ranging from the Florida Keys to the mountains of North Carolina, students learn teamwork, confidence, leadership and gain an increased knowledge of the content of academic classes.

Canterbury’s outstanding faculty consists of teachers who are experts not only in their field, but also in working with the middle school child. In a secure and nurturing environment, we focus on balancing basic skills development through our formal curriculum with the enrichment and exploratory opportunities so important to early adolescent social, emotional and physical growth.
