Upper School

Consisting of grades 9 through 12, the Upper School offers a college-preparatory program with dual credit, honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, an ambitious array of co-curricular activities from interscholastic athletics and community service to performing arts, and a college placement process that enables all graduates to attend four-year colleges and universities.

All traditional areas of the humanities and sciences challenge our upper school students. The demands of an invigorating athletic program and participation in the myriad activities available expand confidence and teamwork, contributing to an education of the whole individual.

Unique features of Canterbury's upper school academic program include miniterms and a Research and Writing course for seniors.  Miniterms, which occur twice during the school year, provide opportunities to have unique and intensive learning experiences. Offerings have included career shadowing, a marine science trip to the Dry Tortugas, Advanced Placement testing reviews, theater set design, student teaching, as well as college visitation. Seniors are required to complete an in-depth Research and Writing course, demonstrating their composition, research, public speaking and presentation skills through an interdisciplinary approach. Each student will have faculty advisors to facilitate the process. Evaluated by a faculty panel, the final project is a valuable tool in preparation for the academic rigors of college.

Every student is assigned to an Advisory Group as part of the character education program.  The focus of these groups will be in three key areas: advisement, character education and community service.  Advisors will work in tandem with the Guidance Counselor and the Director of Student Affairs as student advocates. Students in grades 9-12 are assigned to co-ed groups and remain with the same advisor from freshman through senior year.

Our Upper School encourages students to be self-starters who are globally aware, respectful of others and technologically adept. Upper school classes are small averaging 15 students, reflecting our commitment to assure in-depth relationships between teachers and students. Our students learn to think critically and communicate effectively in an atmosphere that allows them to take more personal responsibility and assume greater leadership roles within the student body.
