Arts EDUCATION
Every student at Canterbury has the opportunity for creative expression. Nowhere is the concept of experiential learning more important than in the arts, and Canterbury provides a wide range of artistic options.
Beginning with our youngest students and continuing through senior year, we offer instruction in all grade levels with talented faculty and visiting artists providing hands-on experiences for performing and studio arts. The program allows students to explore a variety of materials, challenging them with age-appropriate artistic concepts, and integrating arts education into the rest of the curriculum. A social studies unit on Native Americans comes to life when students wearing hand-made costumes fire pottery in the school courtyard.
Students may participate in a tone chime choir, have a part in a theater production, display work in an art festival, play in the school band, build sets, layout pages for the yearbook, throw a pot on a wheel, write for the school newsletter, sing in the chorus, be a stage manager, or run spotlights for school productions. Each student is encouraged to explore creativity as an essential part of a Canterbury education.
