Athletics
Physical education and athletics are an important element in Canterbury's quest to educate the whole child. The physical education program prepares each child to live a healthy life by developing physical potential, lifelong wellness habits, and an appreciation for the benefits of health and personal fitness. Because many of the coaches are teachers, athletics provide another bond between students and teachers as well as among the students.
Interscholastic teams include: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and volleyball.
In 2009-2010 our Crusader athletes had a record-setting year:
VARSITY FOOTBALL: Won the Sunshine State Athletic Conference Championship
VOLLEYBALL: Won District Champtionship
SOFTBALL: Won District and Regional Championships
BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL, BASEBALL: Both District Runner-Ups
BOYS & GIRLS GOLF, BOYS & GIRLS TRACK: All teams had members who were District Qualifiers
BOYS & GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: Teams had members who were District and State Qualifiers
BOYS & GIRLS TENNIS: Teams were District Runner-Ups and individual team members were State Qualifiers
With an athletic complex on the Knowlton Campus, players and coaches have direct access to softball, baseball, football and soccer fields. This facility is among the best in the Tampa Bay area. In fact, District Tournaments for both baseball and softball have been held on our fields for five consecutive years, and we have also hosted Districts for soccer.
Canterbury is proud of the number of graduates that play collegiate athletics. Three young men from the Class of 2010 were recruited to play football at Tuskegee University, Tennesee State University, and Elon University. Canterbury alumni have participated in the following collegiate sports: baseball, basketball, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, soccer, tennis and volleyball.
In recent years, Canterbury student-athletes have attended these colleges and universities: Bates College, Brown University, Case-Western University, Davidson College, Duke University, Eckerd College, Emory University, Florida State University, Florida Southern College, Franklin and Marshall University, Lynn University, North Carolina State University, St. Leo University, University of Connecticut, University of Florida, University of Illinois, University of North Carolina, University of Texas, Urbana University, Wofford College, and Yale University.
