Community
Community is a word often associated with Canterbury. It describes the sense of family felt by students, parents, staff and alumni. It also expresses the result we hope to achieve by creating a nurturing environment that values responsible citizenship and involves learning how to share with others and to help others who are in need.
Canterbury supports an open campus philosophy with parents invited to fill volunteer positions in the library, assist teachers as room parents, enjoy lunch with their children, attend morning assemblies or Chapel, drive for field trips, work concessions for athletic events, sew costumes and help with sets for shows or serve in other roles planned to enhance the life of the school. A vital and active Parents Association, Booster Club and Friends of the Arts provide many opportunities to be involved at Canterbury.
New families are welcomed by current families who act as Ambassadors through the Parents Association. Student Ambassadors are selected as docents to represent the school, its programs and its outreach into the larger community. A"big buddy" mentoring program on both campuses pairs older students as friends and role models to younger students.
Caring for one another and for others is a key quality of student life. One of the advantages of Canterbury's size is the ability for teachers and staff to know each student, enabling students to discuss ideas or needs with trusted faculty. Our advisory program and community service outreach support this character education emphasis. As a result, members of the school community follow an honor code which encompasses mutual respect and understanding, and they develop core values to last a lifetime.
