Resolution for February CAP skit.
At Canterbury, we collaborate with parents to help develop children of good character by creating a learning environment that promotes personal responsibility and ethical behavior. Our focus is on three key components: character education, community service and advisory groups.
A Character Education Committee comprised of parents, students, faculty and administrators worked together to involve all constituent groups in the formalization of a character education program at Canterbury. A smaller group of teachers and administrators developed a course overview, group dynamics information and lesson plans specifically for our families.
As a result, the school now follows a Canterbury Advisory Program (CAP) for students in prekindergarten through grade 12. The program includes the following rationale and objectives:
Rationale
- Build a family relational atmosphere throughout the school
- Provide consistency in setting boundaries and accountability for behavior
- Create a forum to praise and affirm positive behavior and accomplishments
- Improve interpersonal communication skills among students, faculty and parents
Objectives
- Enhance values that are consistent with the mission of the school
- Increase respect for self and others
- Cultivate a positive attitude
- Foster effectiveness of group relationships
- Create a positive school atmosphere
- Increase student awareness of his/her place within the school community and throughout the wider community beyond school
- Encourage each student to understand and live by the Canterbury Honor Code
It is our hope that through advisory groups and our character education focus, Canterbury students will learn more about themselves as well as foster care and concern for the communities in which they live.
