Advisory Program
Canterbury's advisory program (CAP) is designed to develop character, clarify values, build interpersonal skills, enhance the school community and provide academic and personal support. Every student is involved in CAP.
One of the advantages of Canterbury's size is the ability for teachers and staff to know each student. Students are free to discuss problems or challenges with any teacher.
Every student from prekindergarten through grade 12 will be assigned to an Advisory Group as part of the character education program. Advisors work in tandem with the Guidance Counselor and the Director of Student Affairs as student advocates.
Advisors are assigned by grade level at the start of the school year. Classroom teachers are advisors to lower school students in prekindergarten through grade four. Middle school students in grades 5-8 are assigned to advisory groups based upon grade and gender. Upper school students in grades 9-12 are assigned to co-ed groups and remain with the same advisor from freshman year through senior year.
The primary role of the advisor is to serve as the student's mentor and be available to guide the student in any area. Each advisor has a series of suggested lesson plans that revolve around specific concepts. Advisory groups also discuss real-life issues that arise in students' lives. The whole school discusses each of these concepts at the same time in an age-appropriate way:
- 1. Honor
- 2. Respect
- 3. Equality
- 4. Integrity
- 5. Love-Gratitude
- 6. Self-Discipline
- 7. Perseverence
- 8. Responsibility
- 9. Consideration
- 10. Courage
These character education themes are further developed in Chapel, upper school seminars or forums, and at assemblies. Working with students individually and in groups, the advisor will also work closely with parents as a point of contact between school and home.
