Marine Studies Education Center
Canterbury's Marine Studies Education Center (MSEC) is a learning laboratory used by students in prekindergarten through grade 12, which contains a laboratory and a classroom, state-of-the-art technology, and touchtanks filled with marine life. It is the first of its kind in the state of Florida, and one of only a few facilities of its type in the entire country.
The school's location on a creek that feeds into Tampa Bay and the adjacent mangrove habitat gives direct access to the estuary and a living laboratory. Relationships with Tampa Bay Watch, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Eckerd College and the College of Marine Science at the University of South Florida, offer shared learning opportunities with a variety of local organizations and community resources.
Canterbury faculty, professors from the University of South Florida and Eckerd College, and community leaders with expertise in marine life developed a marine studies curriculum for the school with the added component of community service. This program includes all four fields of oceanography: integrating marine geology, marine biology, marine chemistry and physical oceanography.
The MSEC officially opened on the school's Knowlton Campus September 19, 2008. Keynote speaker at the ribbon-cutting ceremony was The Honorable James S. Bennett, St. Petersburg City Council Chair, with honored guests including Dr. Stephen and Betsy Updegraff, Norman and Maureen Dobiesz, and William R. and Hazel Hough.
