Board of Trustees Update
Maureen Donovan-Dobiesz, Board President
It isn't often that we are granted a perspective from outside of ourselves, but thanks to the recent visit of the FCIS* evaluation team that is exactly what we got. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees had the opportunity to be interviewed by the lead team of Heads of Schools from across the state and all they could say was WOW, this school is amazing. They could not praise Canterbury enough.
They took a thorough look at the school including going through our budget line by line. They could not believe the level of programs delivered for the cost. What was our secret? I think it was easy for us to answer that. It is this incredible Canterbury community - on every level people are continuously giving and together it makes the whole school stronger and all the programs we offer exponentially better. I think we all wonder do the small things we do really make a difference? Well here is your answer - absolutely yes.
It begins with our administration. Our Head of School is top notch; he is professional, supportive of his administration and faculty and demanding of professional excellence. He is a natural leader who models integrity, enthusiasm and has an enviable work ethic. FCIS confirmed we are lucky to have him. The team made a point to commend Mac on several major accomplishments since our last FCIS evaluation. The progress made in technology, communications system and our Marine Science Educational Center and program.
Our faculty is passionate about our school, the subjects they teach and the students. The faculty model compassion and understanding and hold themselves and their students to high standards. They care about our student's well-being and it shows in our students' confidence and good nature.
FCIS was very complimentary of our One School feeling. There are so many activities where the campuses are together and interacting, and there is a tangible comfort level between everyone. Several Heads of School said that they had multiple campuses and often had no idea what was happening between them. Speaking of tangible experiences the team was exceptionally impressed they were with our faculty and our students. They felt they were poised, confident and respectful in a very genuine way to all of our visitors. While the programs we offered are academically excellent, everyone rises to the occasion with enthusiasm and purpose. They could not quite get over that special something that permeated the school. I had the occasion to mention this feeling they had to our Lower School Principal, Kathleen Swafford, and she said, "I know what they are feeling. It is the presence of God." How aptly put. We are truly blessed community.

It assures, through the accreditation process, that member schools maintain those high standards and independence in the areas of administration and academic programs.
