Spring Issue ~ April 2009

In the Community

Molly Smith, Director of Student Affairs

Cultural Diversity

The Cultural Diversity Group sponsored a movie night on Thursday, February 26 featuring the documentary, Meeting David Wilson. The film was followed by a discussion facilitated by students. Over 30 students, parents, faculty and staff, and friends attended this program and participated in the thoughtful discussion that followed the film.

The next Cultural Diversity Movie night is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28. Please see Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Lerner for more information. The student group meets on Fridays during club time and the faculty/staff/student/parent/friend of Canterbury group meets approximately every other month.

Interact Update

Interact continues to be a busy and active club with more than two-thirds of the upper school students participating in service work at our school and in our community. Below are highlights of recent projects:

  • For the Suncoast Classic, an event that benefits the Ronald McDonald House. Interact students handed out water at the water stations throughout the course and cheered on the runners.
  • Parent Rich Holsinger (father of Jake Holsinger, Class of 2012) and his 7-year-old son, Noah, addressed an all-campus assembly about juvenile diabetes. The following day, Interact sponsored a "dress down day" raising over $400 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)
  • Interact members walked in the JDRF fundraiser event at Ft. DeSoto and ran a face-painting booth at the event. Student volunteers will also run the booth at the April 18 event at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa.
  • March 27-28 Interact sponsored a team at the Northeast Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. Over $1,000 was raised by the Interact team alone, and they were joined by two middle school teams participating in the event.
Junior Sungoddess Court

Caitlyn Lincoln and Shannon Steel, Class of 2010, were two of the twenty finalists chosen from over 400 young women in our community for the Junior Sungoddess Court sponsored by the Suncoasters of St. Petersburg. This selection was made solely on the basis of their applications and essays.
The Junior Sungoddess program began in 1955 and is a scholarship-based program which recognizes high school women in Pinellas County who display academic success, community awareness, and embody the values and poise to represent the Festival and the City of St. Petersburg as goodwill ambassadors.

Junior Statesman Association

Sam Ballingrud, Class of 2010, was chosen for a summer program sponsored by the Junior Statesman Association (JSA). JSA is a national organization organized at the local chapter level. These chapters collectively form regions which coordinate communication with chapters and run regional events annually.

Seminar for Tomorrow's Leaders (S4TL)

Catherine Jones and Alex Feinberg, Class of 2010, were selected as delegate and alternate delegate from Canterbury for the Seminar for Tomorrow's Leaders 2009 summer leadership program in Lakeland, Florida. Catherine and Alex were interviewed by two Rotarians for this all-expense paid leadership experience sponsored by the Sunrise Rotary Club.
