College Board and AP Recognition
Canterbury faculty are known throughout the country, whether as a Fulbright Scholar, state-level speaker, college guidance authority or developer of character education curriculum models.
In February, Director of College Guidance Donnamarie Hehn attended the College Board Southern Forum in Atlanta, Georgia. On behalf of the school, Mrs. Hehn accepted recognition of institutional membership. As a member institution, Canterbury's teachers are given discounts on College Board materials and workshops. Also Canterbury receives materials directly related to the three areas of College Board: Academic, Guidance and Admissions, College Scholarship Search Service. These three assemblies determine policies related to K-12 academics, school guidance, college admissions, and scholarship services. Speakers at the conference focused on globalization of education and the creation of a "stretch culture" within schools. Mrs. Hehn also presented a session called "Parents in the Process" along with J. Carey Thompson, Vice-President for Enrollment and Student Planning Services at Centre College.
Upper School Principal Dr. Scottie Smith teaches as a member of the science faculty on the Knowlton Campus. In July, she will be speaking at the Advanced Placement Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas. Her presentation, "Genetically Modified Organisms: Ethical Considerations and Scientific Concerns, " addressed the economic, environmental and ethical impact of creating transgenic organisms. This year, Dr. Smith will be an AP Environmental Science exam reader in Lincoln, Nebraska. This will be her tenth year reading exams; College Board asks educators to assist in the review and scoring of advanced placement response sections of the AP exams. In addition, Carlos Gomez, Spanish teacher for middle and upper school students, will serve for his second year as a table leader at the AP Spanish Language reading in June. Table leaders oversee groups of readers for these exams.
Canterbury currently offers 19 different AP courses in the Upper School with more coming in 2009-2010.
