Marine Studies

Marine Studies at Canterbury is a school-wide program for students in prekindergarten through grade 12, focusing on all aspects of marine science and environmental education.  Students will be able to see a Maine lobster in a touch tank, know the difference between types of mangroves, culture fish of different species, plant marsh grass to stabilize shorelines, kayak in local waters to observe the environment, and enjoy fishing trips that are as much fun as they are scientific observation.

The Marine Studies Education Center (M.S.E.C.) is the centerpiece of our program and while located on the Knowlton Campus, is available to all students and teachers.  The M.S.E.C. learning laboratory contains both classroom and laboratory space, state-of-the-art technology, a laptop lab, and an interactive SMART board. A kayak fleet, 23 foot Sea-Pro bay boat, and three aquarium touch tanks filled with crabs, sea stars, fish, shrimp, and tunicates are already inspiring an appreciation of the local environment.

Taking advantage of the school's Knowlton Campus location on a creek that feeds into Tampa Bay and the adjacent mangrove habitat, students have direct access to the estuary and a living laboratory to explore.  Relationships with many local resource organizations including Tampa Bay Watch, Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, Eckerd College and the College of Marine Science at the University of South Florida, allow Canterbury's Marine Studies program to offer learning opportunities available at no other area school.

Canterbury faculty, professors from the University of South Florida and Eckerd College, and community leaders with expertise in marine life developed a challenging and exciting curriculum with the added component of community service. This program encourages and inspires faculty and students to explore all four fields of oceanography, integrating marine geology, marine biology, marine chemistry and physical oceanography for unique, hands-on experiences.
