MARINE Clubs & Activities
Many of Canterbury's clubs and activities focus on the marine environment through outreach and education about environmental issues. The Middle and Upper School Environmental Clubs, for example, create awareness campaigns about recycling and the efficient use of resources such as water and energy. Beyond clubs, students can get involved in nationwide academic competitions like Ocean Bowl or Envirothon which test math and science skills as applied to marine biology, chemistry, geology, physics, technology, history and economics.
Marine Studies Outreach is a middle school club that works to improve the local environment by eliminating exotic invasive vegetation and replacing it with native plants. Fifth grade students researched and wrote a successful grant proposal that was awarded funding from a local agency for this ecologically beneficial project. Butterfly plants and a new birdhouse should attract new residents who will enjoy the garden along with the rest of the school.
In the 2009-2010 academic year Canterbury's Ocean Bowl team qualified for the national competition, and the Envirothon team placed fourth in the state, the team's highest ranking ever.
In the 2008-2009 academic year Canterbury's Envirothon team advanced to the state level after winning the Nature Coast Envirothon competition against 81 other teams. The Ocean Bowl team won the regional competition and advanced to the national finals for the first time. At the national event held in Washington D.C., the team won the James D. Watkins Sportsmanship Award for displaying the best sportsmanship throughout the competition. Both teams were recognized by the St. Petersburg City Council for their remarkable achievements.
GRANT AWARDED FOR STUDENT PROJECTS
Canterbury received funding in the amount of $4,250 from the Southwest Florida Water Management District for our project "Water Wise II". As a part of the project, students will plant an maintain an organic garden utilizing rain barrels, take field trips to a local organic garden and the Tampa Bay Reservoir, install a solar still and create an aquaculture fish farm. They will also benefit from classroom activities with SWFMWD's Water Conservation Kit and the Watershed Resource box.
